Service Area
What areas of Connecticut does M&S Excavation serve?
We serve Middlesex, New Haven, and New London counties, including Madison, Guilford, Clinton, Old Saybrook, Killingworth, Durham, Branford, and the surrounding towns.
Do you work on both residential and commercial projects?
Yes. We handle excavation, septic, demolition, grading, and site work for both residential and commercial properties throughout our service area.
Septic, Water & Sewer
Do I need a permit for a septic system installation in Connecticut?
Yes. Septic installations require a permit from your local health department and must meet the Connecticut Public Health Code. We handle site assessment and installation, and can walk you through what your local health district requires.
How long does a septic system installation take?
A straightforward residential installation typically takes a few days to a week once permits are approved and the site is accessible. Soil conditions, system design, weather, and approval timelines all affect the schedule.
What factors affect the cost of a septic installation?
Soil type and percolation rate, the size of system your property requires, site accessibility, ledge or rock removal, distance from the house to the leach field, and whether it's new construction or a replacement all factor into cost. We provide free, on-site quotes so pricing reflects your actual property.
Can you replace an existing septic system that's failing?
Yes. We handle full replacements, including removing the old system, updating the design to current code, and installing the new system with inspections along the way.
Do you handle water and sewer line connections as well as septic?
Yes. We install water service lines and connect properties to municipal sewer where available, including trenching, pipe installation, and final tie-ins.
Demolition
Do I need a permit to demolish a structure in Connecticut?
Most residential demolition projects require a permit from the local building department, and utility disconnects (electric, gas, water) often need to be arranged first. We manage permitting and utility coordination as part of the job.
What's included in your demolition service?
Permitting, utility disconnection coordination, safe teardown of the structure, and full debris removal, leaving the lot ready for the next phase of construction.
Grading & Land Clearing
How much does land clearing cost?
Cost depends on lot size, density of trees and vegetation, whether stumps and roots need removal, terrain, and whether cleared material is hauled away or mulched on-site. A site visit gives the most accurate quote.
What is the difference between grading and land clearing?
Land clearing removes trees, brush, and vegetation from a site. Grading reshapes and levels the land afterward, creating the right slope for drainage, a stable foundation base, or a proper driveway or road surface.
Do you bring in fill dirt or material if my lot needs it?
Yes. We offer fill and landfill services, bringing in soil, stone, or other material to raise, shape, and grade a property to the elevation needed for construction, drainage, or landscaping.
Utilities
What underground utilities can you install?
Propane tank lines, electrical service lines, water lines, and other underground site utilities, including trenching, placement, backfilling, and site restoration.
Do you call before you dig to check for underground utilities?
Yes. Before excavation begins, existing utility locations are marked through Connecticut's Call Before You Dig (811) system to avoid damaging gas, electric, water, or other buried lines.
Foundations
What excavation work is needed before pouring a foundation?
Excavating to the proper depth, preparing and compacting footings, ensuring proper drainage, and grading and backfilling once the foundation is poured. We handle each step to keep the base stable and code-compliant.
